Prayer is a personal conversation between you and Heavenly Father. He wants to hear from you. He asks us to be open with him and not to say the same prayer every time, because it is really a conversation! Take time before you pray to reflect and prepare. You can thank Him for your blessings and ask Him for help, protection, or guidance depending on what you need at the time. After you have prayed, think about what thoughts you have received and act on them!
When you pray, it's important to completely concentrate on speaking with love and respect to your Father in Heaven. This may mean kneeling, bowing your head, folding your arms, and simply closing your eyes. By using these gestures, you show God that you humble yourself before Him.
The answer is, YES! God promises: when we pray, we will receive answers and guidance from Him. God is our Father. We are His children. That's why He answers us.
When you pray with faith and sincerity, you will experience God working in your life. You will notice how God guides you in your daily life and helps you to make good decisions. God will bless you with comfort and peace. He'll caution you of danger. He wil strengthen you so that you can resist temptations. He'll forgive you of your sins. We feel Him nearby. We have to learn to recognize that influence. We have to learn to listen to the quiet, gentle voice of the Spirit.
What is the Book of Mormon?
Jesus Christ taught us to "pray to the Father in His name." Because Christ is our Savior, you can only pray with God the Father through the name of Christ. By addressing Heavenly Father first and then concluding your prayer "in the name of Jesus Christ," you are speaking to the Father through His Son.
When we pray, we strengthen our relationship with our Father in heaven and with Jesus Christ. Your Father in Heaven has a plan for you, called the Plan of Salvation, and if you pray with real intent, you will see His hand in your life and begin to understand what He has in store for you.
It is important to know that although Jesus Christ died for our sins, we do not pray to Him. Jesus Himself instructed us to pray to the Father in His name. When we do this, we come closer to both Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith."
Such feelings are difficult to describe. But when we have them, we're aware of them. Here are a few examples of what those answers might look like:
Turning on the light in a dark room is like receiving a message from God very quickly, completely, and all at once. Many of us have experience this pattern of revelation when a sincere prayer was answered, or we received the guidance or protection we needed according to God's will and timing. We find descriptions of these sudden and intense manifestations in the scriptures, the history of the Church, and in our own lives. These powerful miracles do indeed happen. But this pattern of revelation tends to be more rare.
Just as the light gradually increases as the sun rises, so it is when you receive a message from God "line upon line . . . precept upon precept" (2 Nephi 28:30). Usually we receive revelation little by little, in small steps. We receive it according to our desire, worthiness, and preparation. This pattern of revelation is more common.
